1. Who we are
This policy explains how DanceFinder (“we”, “us”) processes personal data when you use the DanceFinder Android app (“app”) and this website. DanceFinder is the controller of the personal data described here.
Privacy contact: privacy@dancefinders.com
In short: you can use the app without an account. Location is only used while you use the app, to show events near you. We don’t sell data, we don’t do targeted advertising, and you can delete your account at any time.
2. Data we process
2.1 Using the app as a guest
No account is needed. As a guest we don’t collect your name or email. To return results, the app sends your search parameters to our server (for example city, dates, dance styles and — if you allow it — your approximate or precise location).
2.2 If you create an account
- Account data: email, password (stored only in hashed form), display name, city and, if you add one, a profile photo.
- If you use “Continue with Google”: Google shares your name, email, Google account ID and profile picture with us. We never receive your Google password or access to any other data in your Google account.
- App activity: events saved as favourites; favourite dance styles (used to calculate how well each event matches you); agenda statuses (“Interested”, “Going”, “Danced”) and attendance confirmations, which build your history (“my dance year”); preferences such as language and notifications.
2.3 Location
With your permission, the app uses your device location (approximate or precise, as you choose in Android) to show nearby events and calculate distances. Location is used only while the app is open, is never collected in the background, and we do not keep a location history. You can deny or revoke this permission in Android settings and still search by city.
2.4 Organisers
If you have an organiser account, we process the account’s contact details and the content you publish (event name, venue, dates, description, prices, links and images). Event content is public in the app by nature.
2.5 Technical data
Our servers log technical request data — IP address, date and time, app version, Android device model and version, and error messages — to keep the service secure, prevent abuse and fix bugs.
2.6 When you contact us
If you write to us (support, contact or privacy requests), we process your email address and message to reply.
Event suggestions (events@dancefinders.com): we receive the event link and, if you provide them, the city and your email. Event information is public and may be published after review. Your email is optional, never published, only used to let you know, and deleted within 6 months.
2.7 Public event information
To build a useful calendar, we gather information about dance events that organisers have already made public (websites, social media, public calendars and listings). This may include names of organisers, schools, DJs or teachers, and promotional images. If you appear in an event listing and want information about you corrected or removed, email privacy@dancefinders.com — we handle these requests with priority.
3. Purposes and legal bases
| Purpose | Data | Legal basis (GDPR) |

4. Sharing
We do not sell personal data and do not share it with third parties for advertising. We only share data with providers that help us run the service, under contracts requiring them to protect it:
- Hosting: the provider of the server (VPS) running our API, database and this website.
- Google Play: app distribution and updates.
- Sign in with Google: if you choose “Continue with Google”, authentication is handled by Google.
- Google Maps: the in-app map is provided by Google Maps Platform, which receives map requests (including IP address and visible map area) to display it, under Google’s Privacy Policy.
We may also disclose data where required by law or to protect the rights, safety and property of us or others.
5. International transfers
Where possible, data is hosted in the European Economic Area. If a provider processes data outside the EEA (e.g. Google), transfers rely on GDPR safeguards such as adequacy decisions (including the EU-US Data Privacy Framework) or the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses.
6. How long we keep data
| Data | Retention |
|---|---|
| Account, favourites and preferences | While your account is active. Deleted within 30 days of your deletion request. |
| Location | Not stored — used only to answer the search at that moment. |
| Server technical logs | Up to 30 days, unless needed to investigate a security incident. |
| Backups | Rotated in cycles of up to 90 days; deleted data disappears from backups within that period. |
| Support and contact messages | Up to 2 years after the last contact. |
| Published events | While relevant to the calendar; past events may be kept in aggregate for history. |
7. Security
All communication between the app, this site and our servers is encrypted (HTTPS/TLS). We apply access controls, store passwords with secure hashing and keep our servers updated. No system is 100% secure; if a data breach affects you, we will inform you and the supervisory authority as required by law.
8. Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to:
- access your data and get a copy;
- correct inaccurate data;
- have your data erased (“right to be forgotten”);
- restrict or object to processing based on legitimate interests;
- data portability for data you provided;
- withdraw consent at any time (e.g. turn off location), without affecting prior processing.
To exercise any right, email privacy@dancefinders.com from the address linked to your account. We reply within one month. To delete your account, see also Delete account.
You may also lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority — in Portugal, the CNPD; elsewhere in the EU, the authority in your country of residence.
9. Children
DanceFinder is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their data. You must be at least 13 (or the minimum age of digital consent in your country) to create an account. If you believe a child has given us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
10. This website, cookies and translation
This website uses no analytics, advertising or trackers. The server only logs the technical data described in section 2.5. Contact forms open your own email app; nothing is sent unless you send the message yourself.
Automatic translation
The site is available in English and Portuguese. If your browser uses another language, or you pick one in the “Translate” selector, the page is translated automatically by Google Translate. In that case your browser loads Google’s service, which receives the page text and your IP address, and a technical cookie (googtrans) stores the chosen language. You can turn translation off at any time with “Show original”. See Google’s Privacy Policy. Your language preference is stored only in your browser.
11. Changes
We may update this policy when the app or the law changes. The date at the top shows the current version. For significant changes we will notify you in the app or by email before they take effect.
